Estimated to have had a population of some 30,000 inhabitants in the 9th-10th Centuries, Tula,
then known also as Tollan, served as the Capital of the Toltec
Culture - a very advanced and educated people who were prudent and wise and garnered friendship and confidence
of neighboring cultures.
During Mexico's Revolution in the early 1900s, important battles were fought in the area around Tula between the Carrancistas and the Zapatistas Today's Tula is becoming an incresingly important city due to the Francisco Pérez Ríos Power Plant, the PEMEX Refinery and a Cruz Azul Cement Plant. Agriculture activity in the surrounding area includes corn, beans, oats, wheat and other vegetables such as squash, tomatillo and alfalfa. |
