Mision San Ignacio Kadakaamán

This tropical oasis in the middle of the desert terrain in the central portion of the Baja Peninsula dates back to 1728 when it was settled by Spanish soldiers and Jesuit missionaries led by Juan Bautista Luyando . Date palm trees were planted in the valley floor. These have been nurtured over the years by a small river on the outskirts of the town and a large spring-fed pond.

Cave dwelling pictographs are found in the mountains around San Ignacio. The town also serves as the gateway to San Ignacio Lagoon - the famous wintering sanctuary of the Pacific Gray Whale.
