Situated on the Sea of Cortes south of San Ignacio and north of Mulege, Santa Rosalia traces its roots to the late nineteenth century when a French mining company established a copper mining operation. Indian labor was imported from the state of Sonora and a pipeline and pier where built to handle the ships bringing fresh water and other supplies.

Though mining has ceased due to ore depletion the town is emerging as a tourist destination.
