The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is found in the northern part of the state of Queretaro and spreads into parts of the states of San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo and Guanajuato. The Reserve covers an area of over 1 million acres of very rugged terrain with a wide variety of flora and fauna; and steep mountains and deep canyons.
Principal cities of the Reserve include Jalpan de Serra and Arroyo Seco where Colonial Haciendas have been converted into resort hotels.
Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda whose foundation is accredited to Fray Junipero Serra - of California Missions fame - were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003. The five missions include Santiago de Jalpan and Nuestra Seņora de la Luz de Tancoyol in the municipality of Jalpan; Santa Maria del Agua de Landa and San Francisco del Valle de Tilaco in the municipality of Landa and San Miguel Conca in Arroyo Seco.
Due to a more humid environment, the eastern flank of the Sierra Gorda is more verdant with tropical rain forests in the lower elevations. The western flank is climatically drier and flows into Mexico's Central Plateau.
