Local Sights Laguna de las Ilusiones Directions Parque Tomas Garrido Canabal Description A wide lagoon bordering the Tomas Garrido Canabal park which was inspired by the pyramids at Comalcalco. Museo de la Venta Description A natural stage for thirty colossal Olmec stone sculptures carved about three thousand years ago brought from their locale in La Venta. Nearby Sights Frescoes at Bonampak Directions East on Highway 186 some 70 miles to Catazajá, then south on Highway 199 approximately 15 miles to Palenque zone. Continue south on secondary road to Frontera Echeverria - approximately 100 miles and follow signs to Bonampak. Palenque Description Small Mayan ceremonial center discovered in the 1940's famous for its frescoes depicting life in the area around 600 A.D. Comalacalco Pyramids Directions Some 50 miles east of Villahermosa Description One of easternmost Mayan sites. Pyramid built mostly from mortar derived from oyster shells. The shells can be seen in the mortar. Mayan Ruins at Palenque Directions About 110 miles Southeast of Villahermosa Description An extensive Mayan site surrounded by green hills, cliffs and streams. The Temple of the Inscriptions houses the famous tomb of Pacal - 7th century ruler of the Mayas whose jade mask is an impressive relic. |
