Situated some 30 miles north of Guadalajara, Tequila is the main city in the area where the blue agave cactus flourishes that produces the world-famous beverage with the same name. Recently, the area was given an appelation category whereby only the liquor distilled from local cacti and bottled in the area can be called Tequila. The first distillery was founded by Don Pedro Sánchez de Tagle, Marques de Altamira in 1600.
A train dubbed the Tequila Express offers tours regularly from Guadalajara. |
