As capital of the state with the same name, Tlaxcala is about 70 miles east of Mexico City and lies at the foot of "La Malinche" or "Malintzin" - a 4,400 meter inactive volcano. The Tlaxcaltecas - natives to the area of Otomi origin - played an important role in assisting Hernan Cortes and his troops conquer the Aztecs, their arch-enemies. Colonial churches with ornate chapels and altars and pre-columbian archeological zones are situated nearby. |
