North of Banderas Bay, San Blas is a sleepy village in a lush tropical setting along the Pacific coast. Judging from today's peaceful setting one would not know that San Blas was at one time one of the most important ports along the Mexican Pacific.
Spanish galleons were built in the harbor and launched for expeditions to the Orient. Father Junipero Serra's mission settling expedition to Upper and Lower California parted from San Blas. San Blas is held together by a series of islands in a mangrove jungle setting. With over one hundred species sighted, San Blas is a birdwatchers paradise. |
