In the central part of the state of Veracruz near the vanilla growing region of Papantla, Poza Rica is an industrial town at the eastern foot of the Sierra Madre. It is close to the Pyramid of Tajin - a unique structure built by the Totonaca indians who inhabited the area.
Poza Rica's history dates back to the 1870's when President Benito Juarez sent Victoriano Huerta - a military cadet at that time - with a brigade of engineers to map out a "rancheria". When Porfirio Diaz took office, it was parcelled out in seventy-six 80-hectare lots. Oil well exploration and drilling activity in the area in the late 1920's drove Poza Rica's growth. |
