Cacahuamilpa Caves
Directions Within an hour's drive south of Ixtapan - off the road to Taxco.
Description Impressive geological cave formations with stalagtites, stalagmites and other rock shapes. Over the years, local guides have given imaginative names such as tortillas, the elephant and Dante's Head to some of the formations.


Teotenango Archeological Zone
Directions Off the road between Ixtapan de la Sal and Toluca.
Description The Matlaltzincas - a pre-Aztec culture - flourished at this site between 900 AD and 1200 AD. The local museum named after Dr. Roman Piņa Chan - the late archeologist who explored many sites in all parts of Mexico - houses fine examples of pre-Hispanic artifacts found throughout the entire Toluca Valley.
