Capital of the state by the same name and dubbed the Jewel of the Crown, the beautiful city of Guanajuato played an important role during the colonial period of Mexico. Settled in 1548, it became an important mining center and trading post due to the vast silver ore found in La Valenciana mine which supplied over one half of the silver sent to Spain from all existing colonies.
Today's Guanajuato preserves much of its colonial charm. Flower bedecked balconies in narrow alleys winding along cobble-stoned streets offer very picturesque sights. Panoramic views from the city limits in early morning or late afternoon leave impressions cherished for a lifetime. |
