Founded in 1563 by Francisco de Ibarra, the city of Durango serves as capital of the state with the same name. Together the states of Chihuahua and Durango formed the province of Nueva Vizcaya until 1823 when they each became independent states.
The city of Durango dominates the fertile Guadiana Valley and functions as an important regional industrial and trade center. Its customs reflect many of the traditions dating back to Spanish colonial times. |
