Founded shortly after the Spanish Conquest of Tenochtitlan and named as Villa de Santiago de los Valles de Oxitipa, Ciudad Valles is named for the Rio Valles, the principal river along this confluence of valleys. Valles, as the locals call it, is an important distribution point for the cash crops grown in the region.
Close to Valles, in the Huasteca Region, are the impressive waterfalls at El Meco and Tamul amid spectacular tropical rain forests. Also close by is the Salto de las Golondrinas shaft - a spectacular underground cave with an impressive seventy foot opening at the top, an uninterrupted twelve hundred foot drop to an eight hundred foot wide bottom. Daring precision parachute jumps are sometimes scheduled for filming in this location. |
