Founded in 1637, Cadereyta de Jimenez honors the 6th Viceroy of the Spanish Crown, Don Lope Diaz de Armendariz, Marques de Cadereyta and General Mariano Jimenez - important leader in Mexico's quest for Independence from Spain. Its original territory extended south all the way to what is now the Port of Tampico.
In 1892, Don Eugenio Serrano Garcia founded La Aldeana broom factory. Over the years, Cadereyta became the broom capital of Mexico. Though broom manufacturing still plays an important role in the local economy, Cadereyta's business base shifted to production of petrochemical products when Pemex opened the largest refinery in Latin America in 1973. |
