The original settlement in Bacalar was built in the 5th Century on a beautiful lagoon with the same name. It was ransacked py pirates in the 17th Century and rebuilt in the 18th Century. Fort San Felipe was erected to protect the burgeoning city.

Today's Bacalar is peaceful and used as the gateway to the Cenote Azul - the biggest sinkhole on the Yucatan Peninsula. Being close to Belize, many tourists stop there on their way to Lamanai and other points south and east.
