Lighthouse at Port Altamira

The city of Altamira is situated in the county/township with the same name in the state of Tamaulipas. Due to its geographic location in Laguna Champayan it is fast becoming one of Mexico's most important ports in the Gulf of Mexico. Containership loading and offloading facilities are growing to support industrial growth in the area.

Historically, Altamira dates its founding in the mid-1700's by Don Jose de Escandon - a Representative of the Viceroy of Spain Juan Rodriguez de Albuerne who was the Marques de Altamira. Common knowledge confirms families in the settlement settled Tampico and adjacent areas in subsequent years.

Stradling the Tropic of Cancer the region enjoys delightful climate all year around. Estuaries in the area provide an abundance and variety of seafood used to create wonderful culinary experiences in very rudimentary surroundings.
